– SZA on LANA[1] |
LANA is the upcoming third studio album by American singer SZA. It will be released through Top Dawg Entertainment and RCA Records. The current release date is still unknown, Originally planned as the deluxe edition of SZA's previous studio album, SOS, Lana evolved into its own album that would consist solely of new music.[2]
Background
While in an interview for her SOS album, SZA originally stated that she would most likely disappear from music again for another 5 years to release an album, which led fans believe that the album's release date would be during 2027.
On August 12, 2023, SZA hinted at the deluxe's title name on an Instagram post that includes behind-the-scenes footage from the Snooze music video. She later edited out the caption minutes later.[3]
On September 8, 2023, SZA confirmed the deluxe edition during an album celebration event at Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City. She stated it would have seven to ten songs, four of which she performed at the event: "Saturn", "PSA", "DTM", and "Boy From South Detroit".[4][5][6][7][8]
On November 24, 2023, SZA seamlessly teased the deluxe edition again by posting a picture of herself on Instagram with the caption "Lana".[9] She later confirmed rumors about new music coming soon in December by liking a Tweet about it, which has led many to assume the album would be released on the one-year anniversary of SOS.[10][11]
On December 10, 2023, after posting about the one-year release anniversary of SOS on Instagram, SZA suddenly posted six artworks (likely album/song covers) on her Instagram with the caption “LANA”. In three of the artworks, SZA wore a blue jersey with a large “15” on it, which led fans to believe that the album’s planned release date is on Friday, December 15th, 2023.[12]
On March 25, SZA claimed in now-deleted Twitter posts that following the leaks of three songs intended for SOS, she would be "starting [the album] from scratch" and added: "At this point, y’all can keep the throwaways and leaks [...] Seems like a fair deal. Enjoy". However, she seemed to change her mind as hours later, she posted again to say that the leaks and other outtakes would be officially released on another deluxe edition of SOS as to "not prolong" the wait for Lana itself.
Promotion
On August 25, 2023, SZA released the music video for Snooze. At the end of the video, an unreleased song starts to play in the back while footage from the video is shown for well over a minute.[13][14] Later that same day, Variety teases information about the deluxe;
“Justin Bieber is featured on the song’s extended remix […] An expanded version of “SOS,” with a reported 10 bonus tracks, is expected later this year.”[15]
Then on September 15, 2023, an acoustic remix of Snooze featuring Justin Bieber was released.
On October 3, 2023, SZA got interviewed by the Rolling Stone and set many things straight about the deluxe and gave new information about it;
- DTM was originally confirmed to be the lead single and was originally set to be released alongside the Snooze EP,[16] but was later delayed due to the Snooze remix.[17][18]
- The deluxe will be an entirely new body of work with 10 songs on top of the existing SOS outtakes.[19]
SZA was later interviewed by Variety on December 2, 2023 and answered a question on the upcoming album;
“It was gonna be [‘SOS’] outtakes and some new songs, but it’s become more than I expected. It was gonna be really soft, because I had made all my screaming points, and I just wanted to glide and not think [too much] and get out of my own head — I was so happy to say some shit that didn’t mean a fucking thing. It’s definitely turning into its own album… and I guess I could drop a new album randomly, because no one’s actually expecting that from me right now. But I can’t tell if now’s the time to be consistent, or carefree. On the one hand it’s like, ‘What would Beyoncé do?,’ but I am also deeply inspired by people who do whatever the fuck they want, like Frank Ocean and Andre 3000. Some of my favorite songs were the ones that I dropped on SoundCloud [early in her career], because it was so stress free.”[20][21]
On December 18, 2023, billboards promoting the album started to appear around different locations.[22]
